Thu, 03 Mar 2011 11:43:27 -0800 Holt Area Partnership http://villageinfo.posterous.com/holt-area-partnership http://villageinfo.posterous.com/holt-area-partnership The Holt Area Partnership’s focus is to improve the quality of life for people in Holt and the surrounding area, as shown on our map – the twenty rural parishes contain over twenty five villages in North Norfolk, and our Parishes page gives local information.

How the Holt Area Partnership makes a difference
The main way that the Holt Area Partnership is able to help the local population is through supporting the delivery of a wide range of projects and encouraging partnerships. The projects are set up to respond to needs and they aim to provide tangible benefits to the area.

Projects may be social, economic or environmental – or all three! And they also have to be as cost-effective and sustainable as possible.

The Plumstead 2000 Fund is a registered charity and was established in May 1999 with the object of raising funds for conservation, environmental and charitable ventures for the village of Plumstead and surrounding area.
It started as a committee of the Parish Council to investigate ideas on how to celebrate the millennium. Almost immediately The Plumstead 2000 Fund was born. Its many achievements include the village millennium sign, the parish noticeboard, the bus shelter, a stage and hearing loop for Baconsthorpe village hall, tree/daffodil planting as well as generous financial contributions towards the repair of the Church bell and the renovation of the village pond. It has also presented 25 shows at Baconsthorpe village hall for the enjoyment of the local community

The current Trustees of the Fund are John Lintott and David Ramsbotham.

Money raising activities have been suspended for the time being but if you would like to support the Fund, or if you have any questions, please contact David Ramsbotham 01263 577418 david.ramsbotham@virgin.net

Tue, 27 Jul 2010 11:13:00 -0700 Plumstead Village Pond http://villageinfo.posterous.com/plumstead-village-pond http://villageinfo.posterous.com/plumstead-village-pond

Before the renovation

Before the renovation work started in September 2009 the area was a complete jungle of willows and other "weed" trees and the water that could be seen was murky and completely lifeless. Click for more pictures about the renovation.

After the renovation

Less than one year later plants have recolonised the water [supplemented by introduced native to Norfolk species] and frogs, toads, tadpoles, newts and numerous insects have appeared including more than than 10 different damsel/dragonflies.  The surrounding area has been planted with native shrubs by volunteers from the village and by Spring 2011 the adjoining piece of land should be a vibrant wildflower meadow.

Record of Sightings

History

The pond existed prior to 1797 and appears to have been enlarged by about 50% between 1840 and 1879. It was probably an old clay pit and from the amount of silt removed this was possibly the first time it had really been cleared out. The base consists of a blue/grey glacial clay and the water is about 7 feet deep in the centre. Surprisingly, only two old items were found during the work - an iron "tyre" for a wooden cartwheel and an old horseshoe - which hopefully will bring the village luck!

Official Opening & Funding

The area was officially opened by Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk and the plaque reads:

The restoration of the village pond and surrounding area was carried out by the Parish Council to provide a haven for wildlife and a tranquil and environmentally friendly area for villagers and others to enjoy. It was officially opened by Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, on 24 July 2010.

The project was made possible by generous financial contributions from The Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm, Norfolk Environmental Waste Services Limited, The Plumstead 2000 Fund and with the co-operation of the Barningham Estate.

David Ramsbotham - Chairman

Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm contributed £8500, Norfolk Environmental Waste Services [now NORSE] £4487 and The Plumstead 2000 Fund [the village fund raising charity] £1000. The Barningham Estate has allowed free use of the land for an initial period of 20 years.

Plumstead has won two awards for this project:

  • NNDC Environment Awards 2011 – Improving Natural Spaces’ category
  • CPRE Norfolk Award 2011

Sun, 04 Jul 2010 08:59:00 -0700 Baconsthorpe Castle http://villageinfo.posterous.com/baconsthorpe-castle http://villageinfo.posterous.com/baconsthorpe-castle

Baconsthorpelead

Set amongst farmland and a variety of footpaths, Baconsthorpe Castle is a magical find. On the mere you will see a variety of ducks and geese, and it is delightful to watch the families of these swimming about in spring and early summer.

The Heydons were an ambitious family. They first made their fortunes through the Law profession and later from wool. John Heydon rose to prominence and influence as a supporter and allies of the 1st Duke of Suffolk, William de la Pole. During the turbulent Wars of the Roses (1455-1485) John often switched political allegiances to serve his own purposes. Although he managed to amass great wealth, he also made many enemies, and was described by contemporaries as crafty and Quarrelsome. His position meant he needed a secure base to operate from.

The castle was built in the period from around 1460 to 1486 by John Heydon (died 1479) and Sir Henry Heydon (died 1504). It was built without a licence and initially consisted of a quadrilateral manor house which was later fortified and it became increasingly large and more elaborate as the family's wealth grew. On the east side was a lake and the other sides were protected by a deep ditch.

The house was subject to a dispute in the 16th century when its owner, Sir William Heydon (1540-1594) fell into debt and mortgaged it. In 1590 he decided to sell part of his property but was challenged by his son, Sir Christopher Heydon (1561-1623). Sir William then threatened to demolish the house but Sir Christopher secured a prohibition from the Privy Council and the house was spared. After the Civil War the house fell into ruin.

The present ruins are constructed of flint with some brick. The curtain walls are complete and include the remains of towers, forming a square court of 30m. In the middle of the south wall are the remains of a three-storey gatehouse with a two-storey projection for the drawbridge. To the east are the remains of a two-storey range. To the south is a lake and a moat surrounds the other three sides.

The ruins are administered by English Heritage and are freely accessible to the public during daylight hours.
